‘After all, the food that we put into our body on a daily basis will be absorbed by the follicles that grow our hair.’
It’s something many women aspire to have. That’s why so many ladies spend crazy amounts of money on products that promise sleek, shiny, well-nourished hair that will be the envy of all your friends.
It’s something many women aspire to have. That is why so many ladies spend crazy amounts of money on products that promise sleek, shiny, well-nourished hair that will be the envy of all your friends.
Well, we are here to let you into a little secret. Rather than spending out a truckload on these promises, why not make daily changes to your hair routine and see if you can benefit from them instead?
We have put together a list of daily hair tips that will transform your frazzled mane into your crowning glory!
1. Sleep on silk
Okay, we know that this one sounds pretty luxurious, but who said that a splash of luxury is a bad thing? Definitely not your hair.
The smooth texture of silk is ideal for pillow cases because it won’t rough up the cuticles of your hair as you sleep. This means that you can wake up with beautiful hair – not bed hair!
2. Avoid heat styling too often
We all know that there are going to be times that you will NEED to use your hairdryer or straighteners, but if you can, try to limit how often you reach for them.
If the idea of going out un-styled terrifies you then try to opt for steam rollers as these are gentle on the hair and do not get too hot.
Failing that, invest in a good heat protecting spray which will minimize the damage caused by these hot, electrical styling tools.
3. Never skimp on the conditioner
Your skin needs moisture – fact! But what many of us seem to forget is that our scalp is still part of our skin. In fact, your scalp is the base on which our hair grows and therefore it should be looked after.
You should aim to condition every time you shampoo your hair and don’t forget to put plenty on.
Even better, if you are letting your hair dry naturally then it is a good idea to pop a protective, moisturizing product through it, just to make sure that it is utterly and completely nourished.
4. Keep it clean
There are many people who say that not using shampoo when cleaning your hair is a great way to preserve the natural oils in your hair. Whilst this works for some, there are others of us who simply cannot stay away from hair products. The truth is, as long as you use quality products, there is nothing wrong with it.
If you are not sure on how often you should be washing your hair, then it can depend on where you live and your lifestyle. If you are a city dweller where you are exposed to high pollution or humidity, then you should wash your hair every day. Those who live in more rural areas might be able to get away with a wash every few days.
For those who are still not sure, washing every other day is probably the best way to go as it allows your hair to produce those natural oils but still keeps it nice and clean.
5. Look at your diet
Sounds silly right? But what we eat can have an impact on the way our hair looks. After all, the food that we put into our body on a daily basis will be absorbed by the follicles that grow our hair.
Looking for thick, glossy hair with plenty of volume? Then make sure you have a diet that is rich in zinc, iron, Omega-3 and protein. These are all great for stimulating your hair follicles into growing hair.
If you are worried about your diet…then make sure that you take your vitamins!
6. Stay loyal to a brand
It seems to be a common misconception that if you switch around your hair care brand then you will keep your hair healthy. In fact, this pick and mix shake up has no impact. Your hair cannot tell the difference between products; so whilst you may want to change it up during your search for the perfect brand, you will benefit more by sticking to that perfect one once you find it!
7. Brush gently
Matted hair is a pain and whilst it is tempting to go at it with fury, this can damage your hair. Instead, try to use a wide-toothed comb to resolve those tangled locks and always brush your hair gently from top to bottom. Best of all, try to brush your hair a few times a day to minimize the amount of knots that you find.
8. Protect your hair from the sun
We all know that it is vital to protect your skin against the harmful effects of the sun, but we often forget to give our hair the same protection.
Your hair suffers just as much as your skin can, so as you lather on the sun cream, why not pop some leave in conditioner on your hair? Applying it to only the lower part of your hair will protect you against UV rays, wind and salt water, as well as keep it looking sleek and frizz free.
9. Use the right product for the right part
Knowing the best way to use your product is vital in keeping your hair looking clean and healthy!
Try not to shampoo your entire head. Instead, concentrate on the top half, this is where you will get the biggest oil and product build-up. The conditioner in comparison works best on the lower half of the hair where you are more prone to frizz and split ends.
10. Get it trimmed, regularly
Even if you are growing your hair, it is important to keep getting it trimmed regularly. Every six to eight weeks is the recommended time frame to prevent split ends and keep your hair looking great!
11. Keep the shower cool
We all love the feeling of a nice warm shower, but your hair may not. Try to keep the shower as cool as possible when washing your hair. Excess heat can bash any volume out of your hair, which will lead to limp, lifeless locks.
Instead opt for warm water, enough to allow you to work up a lather but cool enough that your hair will thank you for it! If you can stand it – blast some cold water after washing your hair, to have it looking refreshed.
